After I parted ways with Carmichael a few days ago, I decided to be very selective in looking for a new job. OI was definitely a quality gig for me and I've learned a bit about the type of work I want. I'm concerned my best option may be to start my own blog/magazine. I would like to find an editor like Zillow Dejavu; she was a gem of an editor, letting me develop all my own leads. I searched the classifieds and found a couple. I also went to the Rack and looked at the various magazines. I did go to one "interview." I teleported to the office of a blog magazine. Almost immediately, the executive editor IMed saying she would be right there. I didn't think that was necessary. I chatted with a man who told me he was on trial for a week. That was the first indication this was not for me. When the editor arrived, she began to speak with another man who had just arrived and invited him to the conference room.
Hmmm, was I witnessing a bit of bias there?I decided to wait patiently to see what would happen. A few minutes later, she asked me to join them. When she started explaining the job to us, I thought she must be very green. They are very rigid. Everyone starts on a trial basis and, if they like you after the third article, you get promoted. I told her I was an experienced writer, but that didn't seem to matter. She didn't ask for my resume or previous work.
Nope, not for me. After you read my previous work, you will decide if you want me or not. From there on, it's all a trial; if you don't like the work I'm doing, you have the option of firing me. And if I object to your policies, I can go my own way. I'm interested in doing articles with some "meat." I found I enjoy writing about the economy, as well as the arts. Maybe I'm too serious, but fashion and home aren't high on my list.
Speaking of the economy, I wrote an article for Franco for the economy blog and asked him to review it. After a few weeks of hearing nothing, I emailed him. He replied to say he is too busy right now for the blog. So I have an article with pics ready, but nowhere to peddle it. I think I'll check out a few other magazines and if I don't find any situation I like, I'll just start my own. The only drawback to my plan is I'll have to sell it to advertisers if I want to make lindens.
